Sichuan’s diverse geography — from humid basins to snow-capped plateaus — creates highly varied climates across regions. For international travelers, understanding local weather is essential for safe, comfortable, and rewarding trips.
Chengdu & Central Sichuan Basin
Climate: Humid Subtropical
Altitude: ~500 m
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, features mild winters and hot, humid summers.
- 🌸 Spring (Mar–May): Pleasant and warming (12–25°C). Ideal for city walks and outdoor sightseeing.
- ☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and humid (up to 35°C / 95°F). Frequent afternoon rain and overcast skies.
- 🍂 Autumn (Sep–Nov): Mild and dry. Great for visiting parks and historical sites.
- ❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold and damp (2–10°C), but rarely below freezing. Limited indoor heating — bring warm layers.

Western Sichuan Highlands
(Kangding, Litang, Daocheng, Yading, etc.)
Climate: Alpine Plateau
Altitude: 2,500–4,500 m
These mountain regions are stunning but weather can be extreme and unpredictable.
- 🌸 Spring & 🍂 Autumn: Best times to visit (May–June, Sept–Oct) — clear skies, less rain, and beautiful scenery.
- ☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug): Sunny days (15–25°C), but nights can drop to 5°C or lower.
- ⚠️ Rainy season: July–early Sept sees heavy rain → mudslides, road closures.
- ❄️ Winter (Nov–Mar): Cold and dry. Roads may close due to snow.

Climate: Mountain Continental

Jiuzhaigou is known for its seasonal beauty — each time of year offers a different charm.

- ☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug): Lush and rainy (15–25°C); waterfalls are at their peak.
